An amazing read! A truly gifted artist taken way too soon!

Wow。 I honestly know nothing about this man other than he was a famous recording artist who was murdered。 But his pre-fame poetry is incredible。 So deep and meaningful for such a young man。

Emily Simpson

such an incredible and sadly missed talent a raw, personal collection of poemsthemes including love, racism, growing up in poverty, success and moreand that final poem hit me like a ton of bricks

I started this book in class thinking it was going to be boring。 Little did I know that I would love this book and it would be in my top 5 poetry books that I’ve read。 This book is really inspiring and talks about the struggles that Tupac went through at an early age。 I loved it and wish it was longer!

I really loved the introduction to this text and the work, but it didn’t connect to me as deeply as I wanted it to。 I preferred the formatting (“2” and “u”) instead of the content, which was really interesting。 I’m glad I read this and learned more about a rapper that deserves to be seen as a poet as well。

I signed up to volunteer with our local school disctrict to "vet" books for the high school book groups, and "The Rose that Grew from Concrete" was my first assignment。I was impressed with it。 I mean, if you are looking for something controversial, you'll find it。 I can see some things that might make people nervous。 But I found quite a bit of it to be very tender, and, honestly, almost voyeuristic。 I knew almost nothing about Tupac before reading this, aside from being vaguely aware that his mu I signed up to volunteer with our local school disctrict to "vet" books for the high school book groups, and "The Rose that Grew from Concrete" was my first assignment。I was impressed with it。 I mean, if you are looking for something controversial, you'll find it。 I can see some things that might make people nervous。 But I found quite a bit of it to be very tender, and, honestly, almost voyeuristic。 I knew almost nothing about Tupac before reading this, aside from being vaguely aware that his music style was called "Gangsta Rap," and that he was murdered in the mid-90's。This felt like an accessible, non-intimidating poetry book for teens。 Although, I did find myself wishing for more context, or perhaps some footnotes。 There are several events referenced that were current when he wrote these thoughts down (ca 1989), and I feel like knowing more about them would add context to the poems that reference them。This reads like a private journal, and I feel like a lot of these were written as either rough drafts, or as private thoughts。 The format is nice - with Tupac's original, handwritten text to one side, and a transcription of the same text on the facing page。 It's nice to see his original compositions - scratch-outs and doodles and all。 However, I wonder at the decision to leave all of his original abbreviations and personal shorthand intact in the print version of the poems。 It's a style that I personally found off-putting, but that I admit might help teens who use a similar shorthand to connect with the writing。 (Example: it's very much like text-speak, using abbreviations like the letter U instead of "you" or a 4 to represent "for。") It might be worth noting that the other ladies who were assigned the same text had similar observations。 We all agreed that this has value as a teen book option。 。。。more

The poems were comforting, thought provoking, and satisfying for the soul。 Absolutely gorgeous。

This book came across my path by happenstance, and I'm so glad it did。 Through his own words, the reader gets a glimpse of Tupac's inner thoughts and feelings。 It's like witnessing a piece of his spirit。 The one theme that continues to resonate poem after poem was hope。 In most of his writing, he ended hopefully and that is a precious thing。 This book came across my path by happenstance, and I'm so glad it did。 Through his own words, the reader gets a glimpse of Tupac's inner thoughts and feelings。 It's like witnessing a piece of his spirit。 The one theme that continues to resonate poem after poem was hope。 In most of his writing, he ended hopefully and that is a precious thing。 。。。more

deeply moving and thought provoking。 a must read for tupac fans and even those who aren't fans。 for those with the gift of a poetry, it can be a window into ones soul, as evident by this book in which you read tupac's within the pages。 deeply moving and thought provoking。 a must read for tupac fans and even those who aren't fans。 for those with the gift of a poetry, it can be a window into ones soul, as evident by this book in which you read tupac's within the pages。 。。。more

I usually don’t read poetry, but it’s Tupac。 I surprisingly really loved it, it made me cry, think and smile。 My favourites were the ones he wrote about his mum, they got so emotional。

She then explained to me that this was a posthumous publication of various random poems that he had written, since various phases in his life。 I found this interesting, and she claimed it was one of the best poetry books she had read, and seeing that we both have very similar tastes in books and other media, I had to give this one a try, and I was not disappointed。This book starts with very small intruductions made by some of those closer to Tupac: His mom, his manager, etc。 Afterwards, we can finally dig in to his poetry。 I was completely enthralled by this book。 I had to stop myself from reading this in 30 minutes, because it just pulls you in。 He writes the same way he would write a note to a friend, using expressions like 4 and 2 instead of "for" or "to", and all his writings just feel super real, not something written by some pompous ass who thinks he is a martyr of poetry。 No, this is a real person, with a hard life, who speak of a poor life, a life of someone who struggled, with his own defects and the defects of society。The child of two Black Panthers, and also the son of a mother addicted to crack, his poetry is real and shows how a society can harden those around you, using racism, drugs, betrayals (sometimes, his own), to portray how unfair the game is。 The metaphor is clear: he is the rose that grew from concrete, the one that had no chances in surviving, and above all, to cherish and to live, but it did。 Even beyond all odds, Tupac made his point, and showed to a lot of people what being a black man in America looked like, even in the 90s。 It is easy to stereotype Tupac as a "thug", and only know him due to his "gangster music", but he was so much more, and this poetry illustrates all that。 I think his poetry should be taught in schools, for his candor is so real, and we could use more of that in this world。 。。。more

❤️ I often wonder what his influence would be if he hadn’t been murdered。。。 such a compassionate, radical person。 I bet he would have impacted a lot of people’s minds spilling the truth, while also showcasing the beauty & love around us。

I really enjoyed several of these poems, and I loved seeing Tupac's raw emotions。 Overall, however, his poetry isn't my style。 I really enjoyed several of these poems, and I loved seeing Tupac's raw emotions。 Overall, however, his poetry isn't my style。 。。。more

Some of the poems had resonance and power。 Some were attributable to age and time in life。 I appreciated the printing of scanned originals next to printed versions。

I like this book a lot because Tupac makes great poetry。

This poetry is so important to Tupac’s legacy。 Anyone who loves him as a lyricist needs to read this。And of course their is an entire album featuring many artists with each of these poems that needs to be listened to in full along with this epic body of work。Regarding the books format,One page is written in his handwriting and then the same poem is typed out。 His words changed many。His words will always live on。

As a huge Tupac music fan, I was really looking forward to reading this poetry collection。 Honestly, I enjoy the lyrics of Tupac's songs a lot more than I did this poetry, but the book was a quick read and thus worth it。 Seeing the poems in the poet's own handwriting added a special touch。 The love poems were nice to read, but the final poem was the most profound for me, so in my view the collection ended on a very strong note。 As a huge Tupac music fan, I was really looking forward to reading this poetry collection。 Honestly, I enjoy the lyrics of Tupac's songs a lot more than I did this poetry, but the book was a quick read and thus worth it。 Seeing the poems in the poet's own handwriting added a special touch。 The love poems were nice to read, but the final poem was the most profound for me, so in my view the collection ended on a very strong note。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this poetry book。 I believe that the reason I liked this so much was that I enjoy his music and I like how this shows a different side of him。

Great book for reluctant readers and those who love words。

This book means so much to me。 The honesty and real-ness of his writing is beautiful。 Also in the printed book there are scans of every page he wrote which makes this book more personal。

Rebekah Dellisanti

This was an exceptional collection of poetry。 I never knew Pac had such a deep feeling emotional soul。 His poetry really brings out how much he truly felt about everything happening around him。 I cried over many of these poems because you can feel his pain, heartbreak, love and sadness。 Truly a memorable read。

Jaq

Poetry that is raw, and feels unfinished。 I wonder at what he might have produced if he wasn’t murdered。 This collection oozes potential that we will never see realised。

This is a great starting point for understanding the enduring legacy of Tupac and his brief, meteoric career in rap。 This book contains his early poetry: clear, clean, simple, with themes that are sometimes predictable and occasionally profound。 What makes this title especially interesting is that Shakur's handwritten draft of each poem is set opposite the typed and lightly edited final version。 This is a great starting point for understanding the enduring legacy of Tupac and his brief, meteoric career in rap。 This book contains his early poetry: clear, clean, simple, with themes that are sometimes predictable and occasionally profound。 What makes this title especially interesting is that Shakur's handwritten draft of each poem is set opposite the typed and lightly edited final version。 。。。more

I would say that this book is specifically for fans of Tupac。 Whilst I got through the book quickly, as it’s a poetry book, I didn’t fully enjoy it until I got to the political poems。 Without these I probably would’ve given it just two stars。 Perhaps I’m someone who just doesn’t enjoy taking in a whole book of poems。 It’s really nice to see his emotions come out on the page in an exact copy of his writing。 For a man of just 19, to have that much emotion come spilling out, and to have such knowle I would say that this book is specifically for fans of Tupac。 Whilst I got through the book quickly, as it’s a poetry book, I didn’t fully enjoy it until I got to the political poems。 Without these I probably would’ve given it just two stars。 Perhaps I’m someone who just doesn’t enjoy taking in a whole book of poems。 It’s really nice to see his emotions come out on the page in an exact copy of his writing。 For a man of just 19, to have that much emotion come spilling out, and to have such knowledge on the injustice in the world is, to me, staggering。 I’d pick this up if you’re a fan of the legend or poetry, or both! 。。。more

I hate rating poetry, so I usually don't。 There is just something so personal about it that rating it seems wrong。 Especially here where the poetry is still seen in it's original handwritten form。 I hate rating poetry, so I usually don't。 There is just something so personal about it that rating it seems wrong。 Especially here where the poetry is still seen in it's original handwritten form。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the youthful purity of this collection, some pieces offer cold profundity while others are juvenile attempts at intellectualism。 It reflects heavily on the heart of the teenage poet。 At times echoing of heartbroken poetry of my own then swinging to topical issues I only witness from afar and can only hope we find a way to eradicate。 Seeing it written in his hand, spelling mistakes and corrections uncensored, add to the heart of it。
